Citizens of Washington state have blocked a gay marriage law from taking effect.

Citizens of Washington state have blocked a gay marriage law from taking effect.

The state was going to allow same-sex marriages to start taking place today, but the group Preserve Marriage Washington gathered enough petition signatures to halt that and put the issue on the ballot this fall.

They needed 120,000 and they gathered twice that many -- 240,000.

"This is exclusively about preserving and protecting marriage as we have known it, that's why almost a quarter million people put their signatures on this petition to protect marriage," Joe Fuiten, senior pastor of Cedar Park Assembly of God, said.

No state has ever approved gay marriage when voters were allowed to weigh in.
